"God's Country"

           Hondo, Texas

The first explorers into this area were led in 1689 by Alonzo De Leon who is responsible for Hondo's name. Hondo City, as it was once called, was established in 1881 by the coming of the railroad during the great westward expansion period. The community grew and prospered due to fertile agricultural lands. The county seat was moved to Hondo in 1892. The name, Hondo, came from the first explorers who charted and mapped the area and noted the deep, high-banked stream, which was named, Hondo, a Spanish word meaning "deep."

Hondo is most famous for the "Gods Country" sign that has greeted travelers along US Highway 90 since 1930.

Hondo is noted for great hunting, chiefly, white-tailed deer, dove, and quail, but other game including feral hogs, javelina, wild turkey, and exotics are also popular. The Hondo Area Chamber of Commerce hosts an annual, Wild Game Dinner, the second Saturday in November to welcome area hunters.
